Emergency often leave entire communities in need of urgent assistance to survive and recover. They also threaten efforts and advances in communities’ economic, health,Education and Social progress.
When emergencies occur, rapid assistance can save and improve lives. We will help effective relief agencies and local organizations to respond quickly.
These agencies have the ability to meet people’s most pressing needs in challenging conditions . For example, they can:
· Deliver food and clean water.
· Improve Sanitation.
· Provide medical attention and shelter.
· Prevent or minimize outbreaks of disease.
We will work with relief agencies that have longstanding experience and local relationships. These agencies deliver assistance within days- when needs are most crucial and an immediate response can make the greatest difference.
For Example, we’ve provided emergency assistance to:
Flooding, death and ruin as a consequence of the Hurricane Mitch in November 2008, led to sever damage in Nicaragua, Honduras and San Salvador Approximately 150,000 Families lost their homes, leaving more than a million victims affected by the hurricane. Entire housing complexes was vanished among the rubble caused by mudslides and floods.
It was estimated that 80% of the country’s infrastructure was destroyed by this unprecedented , devastating hurricane. The principal roads as well as bridges have suffered incalculable losses, making transportation between the main cities, as well as internal transportation , almost impossible.
The harvest of mainstay agricultural export crops such as tobacco and coffee has been obliterated . Tourist resort areas have also suffered incalculable damages.
We supported those countries and help rapidly deliver food, water, shelter , and basic medical and hygiene supplies to the area. In addition , UNICEF sent to work directly with local official in the most affected areas. It is also working to prevent outbreaks of water-borne diseases, which have usually accompanied flooding in this area.
